Day 12: Canada's Olympic Medal Count

It's Day 12 of the Games, and Canada's Olympians have given us every reason to be proud. Canada is currently 12th in the overall medal standings with 1 gold, 4 silver, and 9 bronze; for a total of 14 medals. A lot has happened since the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, but despite all the drama, Canada’s athletes have stayed strong and put us on the medal board. In 2008, it took until day eight for Canada to win a medal. Meet Your Olympian: Dylan Armstrong

At 31 years old, Dylan Armstrong is a five-time Canadian shot put champion. He currently has the national record of 22.21 metres. Armstrong’s last Olympic performance, though a personal best and a Canadian record, was just one centimeter shy of podium-worthy. “To come that close, it’s a little bit crushing,” he said just moments after the throw. “I really wanted it bad.” London 2012 is Armstrong’s chance at redemption, and having set a new national record of 22.21, he has a great chance of making it to the podium. The British media were quick to call London 2012 “the first social media Olympics,” but we wonder if they foresaw all the Twitter drama that’s been unleashed recently. With over 500 million users on Twitter, and over 175 million tweets per day, it’s pretty amazing how just one tweet can get you booted from the Olympics. In just five days, however, two Olympics athletes have been expelled for tweeting racist remarks.
