At 31 years old, Dylan Armstrong is a five-time Canadian shot put champion. He currently has the national record of 22.21 metres. Armstrong’s last Olympic performance, though a personal best and a Canadian record, was just one centimeter shy of podium-worthy. “To come that close, it’s a little bit crushing,” he said just moments after the throw. “I really wanted it bad.”
London 2012 is Armstrong’s chance at redemption, and having set a new national record of 22.21, he has a great chance of making it to the podium. The shot put competition is stacked with some of the greatest athletes in the world. That considered, Armstrong is among them.
If you’ve never watched a shot put throw in action, it’s rather interesting to watch. It’s a pretty graceful throw considering the need for strength to be able to throw the 7.26 kg as far as possible.
